SEO AND AdWords
There has been a lot of conversation lately about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and AdWords (Google’s flagship advertising product.) I thought it was time for me to chime in on these important business topics. I want to share my understanding of how they relate to attracting the right prospects and generating more referrals. It is also important to reflect on how they relate to your bottom line.
Both will allow you to connect your business with potential customers. This point is irrefutable. For speed of getting in front of your target market these are two resources that are the best on the World Wide Web. The only things these require are time, money, and messaging (the words selected to connect our business to our potential clients.)
To optimize SEO, content for your website is required, thus the time investment to create content. AdWords requires money paid for words you select that would bring people doing searches on the World Wide Web to your website. Answering the question, “Which Adwords do I want/need to purchase?” is required. Research is required to be certain your selections will return the results you want. That is for every word you pay a fee and then the user is then directed to your website. These can be selections by people who want to buy your product/service or are just browsing the Internet. With SEO and AdWords the goal is to get your website to as close to the number one spot on the first page of a Google Search when someone is searching for your product and/or service. Then it is up to your content to get them to buy (another article for the future.)
A key point here is to also consider your branding. Do you have a logo, or a special saying? Do you want the public to recognize your personal name, company name, or both? Is there a system to accomplish these while investing time and getting a cash return? Let’s explore these questions.
Capture your personal name (Gerry Rose, www.gerryrose.com) and company name (INTEGRITY, www.integritysd.com) as early as possible when creating domain names URLs, (Uniform Resource Locators) for website creation and branding purposes. Even if you intend to only use one or the other the small cost of each per year is so small that having to buy it from someone else in the future could make the cost prohibitive. Branding will be taken care of by doing this and capturing/trade marking your logo including any special words or sayings.
Creating content is a given. We can invest our money in having someone else create the content. Having someone create content is another expense that might be too much to cover with most business start-ups. You could spend the time creating content while writing articles for local, national, and international (depending on the location of your target market) media. Creating them in small segments and then publishing those to your website would gradually increase your exposure and content. Selling the articles will allow you to pay for AdWords and pay to hire an SEO website designer. This will get you closer to optimization of product/service.
AdWords and SEO can be right for the right application. They can also be wrong for many. Is your offer over the Internet going to deliver your company a paycheck? Is your website just for exposure? In this day and age it is still OK to have a website full of content that is inexpensive and increases exposure. Having it be an electronic business card is OK too. As you build relationships face to face, and as your clients buy your products/services because of who you are, then it is OK to have high content.
